Sanctuary in Marrakech

Helga Heidrich, founder and president of the Fondation for Animals in Need, was already involved in animal protection in Germany. When she visited Marrakech in 1992, she was shocked by the indescribable plight of animal protection. She immediately decided to help and rented a 2 hectare property in the rural area of Marrakech, the Douar Tohana, Commune Al Ouidane. She began to install a water and electricity supply, as well as stables, boxes and outdoor enclosures, and a sanctuary was created for animals in need from the region.

By opening the sanctuary, we created a special paradise for animals with a traditional charm. The demands were high: a piece of land in a secluded location in the middle of unspoiled nature, that's what the Agafay region - near Marrakech - offers. Only natural materials were deliberately used for the construction. The traditional stones were made by hand. The eucalyphtus wood received only natural wood protection; no chemical impregnation was used. We were able to implement many old and traditional construction methods here that fit harmoniously into the idyllic surroundings of Agafay. A short overview:

The sanctuary offers a variety of animals protection and the opportunity to lead a respectable life.

  • A dog park with massive huts
  • An outdoor cat enclosure with 2 cat houses

  • Horse stables and paddocks with sun protection
  • A Parrot house with outdoor enclosure
